How your payment method shapes your options
Cards, bank transfers, crypto, gift cards and cash each travel differently. Here is what that means, honestly.

The short answer
Card payments usually have the most structured dispute routes, bank transfers depend on speed and local reimbursement rules, while crypto, gift cards and cash have far fewer options.
An honest starting point
Whether money can be recovered depends heavily on how it was sent, how long ago, and where it went next. Some routes have established dispute processes; others have very few. Knowing which situation you are in helps you focus your energy — and helps you spot anyone promising more than is possible.
Credit and debit cards
Card payments often have the most structured options. Card networks allow issuers to dispute certain transactions, commonly called a chargeback. Time limits apply and vary by issuer and network, so contact your card provider promptly and ask what applies to your payment.
Bank transfers and wires
Transfers can sometimes be recalled if the receiving bank acts before funds move on, which is why speed matters. Rules on reimbursement for authorised push payment fraud differ significantly between countries. Ask your bank directly what policy covers your transfer and request their decision in writing.
Cryptocurrency
Crypto transactions generally cannot be reversed. Where funds pass through a regulated exchange, that exchange may be able to freeze an account if notified by law enforcement. Preserve every wallet address and transaction ID and report to police. Be especially cautious of anyone claiming they can "trace and retrieve" crypto for an upfront fee.
Gift cards, cash and money transfer services
Contact the gift card issuer immediately with the card numbers and receipts; unspent balances can sometimes be frozen. For money transfer services, call their fraud line straight away — if the money has not yet been collected, it may be possible to stop it.
Checklist
- Identify exactly how each payment was sent
- Contact the card issuer, bank or service used for each payment
- Ask which dispute or reimbursement policy applies and its time limit
- Request decisions in writing
- Preserve transaction IDs for crypto transfers
Common questions
Can crypto be traced and returned?
Transactions are generally irreversible. Regulated exchanges may freeze accounts when notified by law enforcement, but be wary of anyone charging upfront to trace funds.
What is APP fraud?
Authorised push payment fraud is when you are tricked into sending a transfer yourself. In the UK, reimbursement protections apply to many such payments.
